"ON A tight budget, not brand conscious but still want music on the go?
A homegrown company has come up with what it is pitching as a cheap alternative to Apple's tiniest digital music player, the iPod Shuffle.
The Kube, made by consumer electronics company Bluetree Electronics, is half the size of your thumb and sells for $34.90.
Apple's iPod Shuffle, the size of an AA battery, is retailing at $79.90.
The 18 gm Kube can hold 2GB worth of music - up to 500 songs - the same as the Shuffle.
The Singapore-made MP3 player is now being hawked at all 450 7-Eleven stores across the island.
Ms Goh Djong Djong, the sales manager at Bluetree, said she hopes the Kube will win fans among the 10- to 16-year-old crowd, along with 'young working adults and aunties who are watching their pockets'.
Sales have been 'encouraging', she said, declining to give specific figures.
But a check with the Orchard Cineleisure branch of 7-Eleven indicated that 30 units have so far been sold there.
Five other branches said they have sold between three and 10 sets a day, a figure they described as encouraging."
